vineyard
Gjoko Antoniev
"Lojze" – this is how we pronounce it in our dialect (or the vineyard, if the literary term is used). I created this painting with the idea of depicting my father working in the vineyard, which was also worked by my grandparents. We still work it today, and my father visits it more as a hobby, with great love and dedication. In the painting, there are furrows from plowing, placed diagonally, alongside the vineyards, creating dynamics and depth in the composition. This arrangement of furrows has an important visual effect, as the diagonal lines help create a sense of movement and space, while simultaneously guiding the viewer's gaze across the painting. The vineyards are placed next to each other, which creates a simple rhythm – repetition of similar forms and structures, emphasizing the rhythmic organization of the painting, adding stability and order to the composition.
In the center, there is a stick with a bottle placed upside down on it. This element can be interpreted as a symbol of transience, nature, and human labor. The symbolism of the bottle in the context of the vineyard and agricultural work creates a metaphor for the cyclic nature of life and labor.
In the background, the sunrise is painted with warm colors, while the mountains are depicted with cool shades of violet and blue. The interplay of warm and cool colors creates contrast and visual interest, while also illustrating the natural cycle of the day, beginning with the sunrise but transitioning into the cool tones of evening. This contrast not only highlights the scene but also creates an emotional tone, where the warm colors symbolize hope and new beginnings, while the cool colors bring a sense of peace and tranquility.
Above the vineyard, there is another field with an orchard, and beneath a pear tree, there is a small improvised bench, which I painted in the picture. This part of the painting adds an element of realism, depicting everyday life and the natural connections between people and the land.
On the left and right above the vineyard, there are two haystacks. When we connect the objects in the painting – my father, the bottle, the bench, and the hay – we form two triangles. This is a geometric composition that directs the viewer's gaze towards the center of the painting, while simultaneously creating a sense of harmony and balance.
In the painting, I placed an interesting interplay of warm and cool colors, which creates dynamics and contrast. The composition, which includes various objects, lines, and colors, forms the solid visual link that ties the entire scene together, while the use of natural elements like the vineyards and trees strengthens the symbolism of nature and human labor within it.
